12 new swine flu cases detected

Twelve fresh cases of swine flu were detected today, raising the toll to 259 across the country.

The swine flu experts are conducting research worldwide to find out whether any unknown virus is being formed jointly from swine flu, bird flu and seasonal flu, IEDCR Senior Scientific Officer Dr Mushtaque Hussein said today.

As part of international monitoring, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has tested the samples, he added.

Dr Mushtaque Hussein was addressing a seminar on swine flu jointly organised by Bhorer Kagoz and Desh TV at Press Club.

IEDCR however stopped its testing facility for detecting swine flu but it is testing samples of the patients admitted to different city hospitals with the severe symptoms of swine flu.

Mushtuq Husain told The Daily Star yesterday that they did not test patients who came for diagnosis on personal initiatives but took samples from those referred by other hospitals.

Quoting the guideline of the World Health Organisation, IEDCR Director Prof Mahmudur Rahman said as the flu has spread widely there is no need now for any individual test. Rather than wasting time, the patients should be provided with symptomatic treatment and anti-viral drugs in cases of respiratory problems.

Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque also said yesterday that patients suspected to have swine flu should get treatment immediately instead of waiting for confirmation of swine flu infection.
